Priscilla D. Willis

American author. She has written three pony stories, two forming a short series about a boy and his love for a hunter. Under the name of Mary Scott Adams she has also written a fictionalised account of her real-life attempt to run a dilapidated farm.

The Saint Series:

1) ALFRED AND THE SAINT

Reprinted in hardback by original publisher in 1953.
SUMMARY: Mute boy Alfred is the son of a huntsman. When Alfred's favourite hunter The Saint suffers a heart attack and is about to be put down, Alfred, his father and the owner's daughter conspire to save the horse. Their actions lead to Alfred regaining his lost voice.

2) THE RACE BETWEEN THE FLAGS
(LONGMANS, GREEN & CO [USA] 1955)
ILLUSTRATED BY CARL KIDWELL
SUMMARY: Alfred wants to tide The Saint in steeplechases but is dismayed when he realises he is too young to get a jockey's license.

Reasonably easy to find in the USA., although prices tend to vary a lot. Quite a bit harder elsewhere.
